Advancing Biological Imaging

Highlights from the CLEM Conference on March 19 - 22 in Ghent, Belgium

22 March 2024

At the recent CLEM24 conference, attendees delved into the realm of imaging life in three dimensions and its most natural form, particularly focusing on imaging biological samples using light and electron microscopy. The primary aim was to unravel biological processes and their ultrastructural context in three dimensions. In recent years, technological advancements have significantly pushed the resolution limits in light microscopy, with volume-EM methods gaining recognition as one of the seven technologies to watch by Nature magazine.

This event on Correlative Light & Electron Microscopy (CLEM) was jointly organized by ZEISS, The Francis Crick Institute, EMBL and VIB.

We asked OC members Anneke Kremer (VIB Bioimaging Core Ghent, BE) and Erin Tranfield (VIB Bioimaging Core Ghent, BE) what they thought about the CLEM24 conference:

Anneke Kremer: For 3 days, 150 light and electron microscopists (from 24 different countries) joined us in Ghent for a very successful 7th edition of 'From 3D light to 3D electron microscopy'. The combination of talks and workshops created ample opportunities for discussion and networking. I was delighted to see the exchange of knowledge and experience between workshop trainers and participants.

Erin Tranfield: This has been an incredible meeting. Thank you very much to Zeiss for their corporate contribution to this event. And also for their scientific contributions for the workshops they taught, and the microscopes they lent us. Thank you to EMBL and The Francis Crick Institute for helping organize this event. And thank you to the VIB Bio Imaging team for putting this all together. And finally a really big thank you to all of you, because these conferences do not work if it isn’t for the people who participate.

Impressions of the CLEM24 conference

Excellent opportunity to hear some of the latest developments with time to meet up with friends / colleagues and meet new people. Was great to see a lot of new faces!

The workshops made it easy to network with the correct people during the coffee breaks and because it was in small groups you could easier meet new people.

It was nice to meet the leading experts in the field and the latest research work.

Throughout the conference, scientific sessions were complemented by a diverse range of workshops. These workshops facilitated the exchange of correlative workflows, tools, tips, and tricks among participants and trainers/speakers, fostering collaborative learning and knowledge dissemination.

Are you curious what conferences we have planned for this year?
