Biography

Tanja Kortemme is a Principal Investigator at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Her research seeks to invent approaches to engineer new biological functions at multiple scales, ranging from atomic details to macromolecular machines to cellular processes. By building new functions through a combination of computational design and experimental engineering, she also hopes to learn how molecular design principles shape systems-level properties of biological functions.
Kortemme obtained her PhD in Biochemistry at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Heidelberg and the University of Hannover. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher in computational and structural biology at EMBL Heidelberg and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of Washington, Seattle.
