Impact story 1: Moving Beyond One-Size-Fits-All in Ovarian Cancer Treatment

Dr. Liselore Loverix (UZ Leuven, VIB-KU Leuven) & Prof. Dr. Toon Van Gorp (UZ Leuven)

The Leuven Homologous Recombination Deficiency (HRD) test started as Liselore’s PhD thesis in collaboration VIB center for cancer biology, KU Leuven with a clear goal: to move from ‘one-size-fits-all’ to a more personalized approach in ovarian cancer. The design and development of this new Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) test for targeted sequencing started in the lab in 2020 and translated quickly into clinical practice by obtaining BELAC accreditation in 2023. The Leuven HRD test is now available for all women with a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in Belgium and part of routine genetic testing via Center of Human Genetics in Leuven. Thanks to the close collaboration between VIB and KU Leuven, the Leuven HRD test as translational research topic went not only from lab developed to certified test for patients, it’s success became impactful on national and international level.
