Prof. Beyaert and Prof. Haerynck will highlight the transformative impact of the VIB Grand Challenges research programs, PID1.0 and PID2.0, on the diagnosis and treatment of primary immunodeficiency (PID) or currently inborn errors of immunity. PID encompasses a diverse group of more than 500 genetic disorders that impair the immune system, often presenting significant diagnostic challenges due to its heterogeneous symptoms and the unclear significance of many genetic variants. Through cutting-edge research, VIB Grand Challenge PID1.0 has made groundbreaking discoveries, including the identification of two new PID-causing genes and a deeper understanding of gene functions within the immune system. These findings have enabled the development of improved diagnostic tools, leading to early and precise diagnosis, more accurate patient stratification and tailored treatments. Additionally, predictive markers for immune disorders are being optimized, paving the way for earlier interventions and better outcomes.
This presentation will showcase how VIB’s interdisciplinary approach combines clinical expertise with state-of-the-art technologies and collaborative efforts driving innovation in patient care, while fostering talent development, and impactful partnerships. By addressing unmet medical needs through bidirectional translational research, VIB Grand Challenge PID projects establish a blueprint for advancing scientific knowledge and patient care in rare disorders and improving lives globally.
