Benjamin Bailleul

Sorbonne University, FR
Biography

Benjamin Bailleul, trained as a physicist at ENS (France), began researching the functional regulation of photosynthesis in diatoms and other microalgae during his PhD at IBPC (France). He continued this work through postdocs with Chris Bowler (France), Pierre Cardol (Belgium), and Paul Falkowski (USA). In 2015, he joined CNRS as a senior researcher in the Laboratory of Chloroplast Biology and Light Sensing in Microalgae, founded by Pierre Joliot. He leads the 'Biophysics of Photosynthesis' team, focusing on the biodiversity of photosynthesis in diatoms, dinoflagellates, cyanobacteria, and coccolithophores. One of his main research areas is the study of photoprotective mechanisms in diatoms. His recent research uses photosynthesis as a stress diagnostic tool to study interactions between microalgae and viral infections. He now splits his time between the Paris laboratory and the Biological Station of Roscoff to apply new methods in the field.
