Biography

Diana Piol is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Padova. Throughout her scientific career, she has developed expertise in the mechanisms driving axonal degeneration and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) denervation, which represent early pathological events in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular disorders.
After winning an ERC Starting Grant and a STARS Grant from the University of Padova, she established her laboratory in 2025 to investigate synaptic and axonal processes involved in the onset and progression of motor neuron diseases, including ALS and spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA). Her work focuses particularly on the hormonal regulation of local translation and its impact on maintaining NMJ stability. By combining in vitro and in vivo models with cutting-edge spatial omics and single-cell sequencing technologies, her research aims to support the development of innovative therapeutic strategies for motor neuron diseases.
