Fenne Riemslagh
Fenne Riemslagh has a background in biomedical sciences and received her PhD at the department of Clinical Genetics at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam in 2019. Fenne’s research focused on molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders. During her PhD, she had the opportunity to supervise up to 8 students’ projects and got her teaching qualification. For her postdoc, Fenne moved to Denver, Colorado, to study cardiovascular diseases. She generated a single-cell RNA sequencing dataset and analyzed it on the high-performance cluster and in R-studio. She had a wonderful time hiking in the mountains of Colorado, but after 3 years, she decided to move back to the Netherlands and continue her career at the Netherlands eScience center, where she focuses on teaching digital skills and promoting open science practices.
Since 2023, Fenne Riemslagh has been the coordinator of the training program of the Netherlands eScience Center. She is the main contact point for the digital skills program; a set of workshops designed to educate researchers affiliated with Dutch research institutes on diverse digital and coding skills. She also helps to coordinate the research software management trainings of the eScience center. More importantly, she is a community coordinator of research software training NL (RST-NL, the Dutch network of software trainers at multiple universities), and for the research software engineering (NL-RSE) community. By providing a train-the-trainer program using the infrastructure of the Carpentries, she empowers others to start teaching digital skills. During the National Research Software day (NRSD) 2026, she won a prize to invest in soft/non-technical skills of the RSE community.
One of the newest projects that Fenne is currently undertaking is the development of a post-master's engineering doctorate degree, specifically for educating the future generation of RSEs. This educational program will be delivered in collaboration with the Stan Ackermans Institute of the 4 technical universities in the Netherlands and is aimed to start in 2027.
Next to her work, Fenne spends time with her family in the Netherlands and Belgium!, and loves swimming and yoga. Fenne is also a board game enthusiast and cat lover.
