Jared Sterneckert

Technical University of Dresden, DE
Biography

Prof. Sterneckert’s PhD training was supervised by Prof. John D. Gearhart, who co-announced the first derivation of human pluripotent stem cells. During his Ph.D. work, Prof. Sterneckert successfully directed the differentiation of both mouse and human embryonic stem cells into motor neurons. During his post-doctoral fellowship with stem cell pioneer, Prof. Hans R. Schöler, Prof. Sterneckert initiated an independent research program to model neurodegenerative diseases and to use induced pluripotent stem cells-derived models for high-throughput drug discovery. Prof. Sterneckert’s team also initiated, and successfully completed, cooperative projects with at least three different pharmaceutical companies. As a group leader in Dresden, Prof. Sterneckert has received funding awards from multiple organizations in the USA as well as in Europe. He successfully led a consortium composed of clinicians, researchers and a pharmaceutical company dedicated to translational research in Parkinson’s disease, specifically to inhibit the spread of pathology from motoric dysfunction to cognitive decline. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is currently the primary focus of his team’s research.
