Manuel Matzinger
As Senior Core Scientist and Deputy Head of the Proteomics Technology Hub at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna, Manuels work is primarily focused on investigating cellular heterogeneity through ultra-sensitive mass spectrometry and uncovering complex protein-protein interaction networks. Manuel earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Vienna, where he specialized in the study of transcription factors and cellular stress responses. Since joining the IMP in 2020, he has been at the forefront of methodological advancements in single-cell proteomics. His research has achieved unprecedented depth in protein quantification, recently leading to a landmark publication in Nature Methods that detailed the quantification of over 5,000 proteins in a single cell. As project lead within a recently funded grant from the Austrian Science Fund, he now aims in advancing this technique towards multiomic analyses from the same cell but also to further push the limits towards analyses from single bacteria with protein inputs in the sub-picogram range. Manuel is an elected board member of the Austrian Proteomics and Metabolomics Association (APMA) and is a co-organizer of the annual European Symposium on Single Cell Proteomics. In 2025, he was awarded the APMA Society Medal in recognition of his pioneering contributions to the field.
