Ravinder Maini
Professor Sir Ravinder Nath Maini is a physician-scientist whose work has transformed the understanding and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. A leading rheumatologist and immunologist, he helped establish tumour necrosis factor (TNF) as a therapeutic target and, with Professor Marc Feldmann and colleagues, played a central role in translating this insight from laboratory research into anti-TNF therapy. This work opened a new era of targeted biological treatment for inflammatory disease.
His research spans autoimmune disease, cytokines in inflammation, tissue injury, immune regulation, B-cell biology and autoantibodies in rheumatic disease. With more than 500 publications, his work on TNF blockade for rheumatoid arthritis has been especially influential: it demonstrated how biological understanding could directly shape effective, targeted treatment. His books, editorial work and scientific leadership have made enduring contributions to rheumatology and clinical immunology.
