Biography

Dr. Shafeer Kalathil is a Microbial Electrochemist and an Assistant Professor at Northumbria University, Newcastle, England. He is also a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment, a joint initiative between Northumbria and Newcastle Universities funded (£8M) by Research England. He was a Marie Curie Individual Fellow at the University of Cambridge and a JSPS Fellow at the University of Tokyo.

He has a track record of independent and collaborative research leading to publications in leading peer-reviewed journals, e.g., Nature Catalysis, Nature Energy, Angew. Chem. and Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. He has published 32 peer-reviewed publications with an h-index of 25 and has 10 patents to his credit.

He is leading a research group of 3 PhD students and his laboratory develops new concepts and technologies by integrating microbes with light harvesters to produce solar fuels and chemicals from carbon dioxide.

His research has been funded by Research England, EPSRC, BBSRC, Johnson Matthey, and Procter & Gamble. Currently, he is serving as an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Microbiology, and Review Editor of RSC Advances, and a Reviewer for the Swiss National Science Foundation. He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Biology.
