Biography

Dr. Sjoerd van der Post is a Principal Investigator and Senior Researcher at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He completed his PhD at the University of Gothenburg in the Mucin Biology Groups, defining the protein composition of the mucus layer in health and disease. Following his doctoral studies, he completed a postdoctoral research period at Washington University in St. Louis. There, he expanded his expertise in mass spectrometry-based proteomics and developed an interest in intestinal stem cell biology utilizing organoid models. Back at the Mucin Biology Groups, his team's research focuses on host-microbiota interactions, the essential role of mucus in preventing enteric pathogen infections, and how intestinal epithelial stem cells adapt to lifelong exposure to the microbiota. By combining mucin biochemistry and structural biology, his lab seeks to uncover how bacterial pathogens overcome the protective mucus barrier and identify new strategies to prevent infection.
