Biography

Stanley Perlman is professor of microbiology and immunology, professor of pediatrics, and the Mark Stinski Chair in Virology in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. For 38 years, his laboratory has been interested in the pathogenesis of murine coronavirus infections, and have been studying three respiratory human coronavirus infections: SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)-coronavirus, Middle East Respiratory syndrome (MERS)-coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), human coronavirus-OC43, and human coronavirus-NL63, with the focus on mice infected with murine adapted strains of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 to understand the basis of these severe diseases. From his decades of experience in the field, Prof. Perlman will share his views on current and future outbreaks of coronaviruses.
