Theodore Alexandrov

EMBL, DE
Biography

Theodore Alexandrov is a team leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the head of the EMBL Metabolomics Core Facility, a faculty member of the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit between EMBL and Heidelberg University, and a Principal Investigator at Bio Studio at the BioInnovation Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Alexandrov team at EMBL aims to unveil the intricacies of metabolism in tissues and single cells across time and space by developing experimental and computational technologies, software, and resources. Their efforts have led to over 100 journal publications, multiple patents, and the founding of two startups in the fields of spatial and single-cell -omics. Key contributions include the development of METASPACE, a cloud-based, open-source big data platform for spatial metabolomics, and SpaceM, a method for spatial single-cell metabolomics. From 2010 to 2017, Theodore Alexandrov co-founded and served as the scientific director of the startup SCiLS, which developed leading software for imaging mass spectrometry. Since 2021, he has been leading a startup-in-incubation at the BioInnovation Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, focusing on leveraging single-cell metabolomics and artificial intelligence for drug and therapy discovery.
