Valerio Chiurchiù

Institute of Translational Pharmacology and IRCCS Santa Lucia Foundation, IT
Biography

Dr. Valerio Chiurchiù is the Head of the Laboratory of Resolution of Neuroinflammation at the Institute of Translational Pharmacology (CNR) and IRCCS Fondazione Santa Lucia in Rome. He earned his Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” and is currently Associate Professor of General Pathology at Medicine Faculty of Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome. Over the past 18 years, Dr. Chiurchiù has pioneered research on the immunomodulatory functions of bioactive lipids, including endocannabinoids and specialized pro-resolving mediators such as resolvins, protectins, and maresins. His groundbreaking studies revealed how these molecules orchestrate the resolution of inflammation, particularly in neuroinflammatory diseases like multiple sclerosis. His discoveries have reframed multiple sclerosis as a condition linked to impaired resolution of inflammation and opened new therapeutic avenues aimed at promoting resolution rather than blocking inflammation. Dr. Chiurchiù’s international collaborations—with leading scientists such as Prof. Charles Serhan (Harvard Medical School) and Prof. Daniele Piomelli (University of California, Irvine)—have strengthened his research impact. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed papers in high-impact journals including Nature Cell Biology, Nature Communications and Science Translational Medicine, with an H-index of 36 and over 6,000 citations. His scientific excellence has been recognized with major honors, including the Galeno Award (2018) and the Rita Levi Montalcini Prize (2024). Through his leadership, mentorship, and clinical translation efforts, Dr. Chiurchiù continues to shape the emerging field of inflammation resolution and its applications in human health.
