Bob Asselbergh
After completing his studies in Bioscience Engineering and earning a PhD (2007) on plant–pathogen interactions at Ghent University, Bob developed a strong passion for microscopy and advanced imaging technologies. At the VIB-Uantwerp Center for Molecular Neurology (CMN), he lead the BioImaging Expertise Unit, where they support research at the intersection of neurogenetics and neuroimmunology. Their mission is to enable high-quality, tailored microscopy workflows to study complex neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s diseases, frontotemporal dementia, epilepsy and peripheral neuropathies. Bob's work focuses on integrating cutting-edge imaging and analysis methods—from quantitative fluorescence assays and automated high-throughput microscopy to super-resolution expansion microscopy—into biological research. Beyond scientific support, he is responsible for maintaining and expanding our microscopy infrastructure, training researchers, and building networks within and outside VIB to advance bioimaging capabilities.
