Speaker line-up of 4th edition of Applied Bioinformatics is available

9 December 2021

Bioinformatics has quickly become an integral part of life sciences research by enabling innovative computational approaches in an increasingly data-dense environment. Inspired by the sold-out editions in 2016, 2018, and 2020, VIB is organizing the fourth edition of Applied Bioinformatics in Life Sciences to highlight recent developments in bioinformatics research, and to showcase its impact in medical, agricultural, and biotechnological research.

Alex Botzki, Head of the VIB Informatics Core, launched this VIB Bioinformatics series in 2016:
‘I am so happy to see the Applied Bioinformatics conference series evolve over the past years by following latest developments in computational biology which set the scene for more and more breakthroughs in modern data-intensive life sciences research.’

A new topic for the 2022 edition is ‘Image analysis’. In the past decades, new computational methods have been adopted at all steps involved in imaging, from the raw acquisition to all kind of post-processing. The following experts in developing computational tools for image analysis confirmed for that session:

  • Anna Kreshnuk (EMBL, DE) who is developing machine learning-based methods and tools for automatic segmentation, classification and analysis of biological images.
  • Martin Jones (The Francis Crick Institute, UK) who will present ‘ Dealing with Big Data in Volume Electron Microscopy’
  • Joris Roels (VIB, BE) who is developing machine learning methods to solve the many challenges that come along with biomedical image analysis.
  • Raphaël Marée (ULiège, BE) who developed the CYTOMINE-tool which is now actively used in various domains including digital pathology.
  • Florian Jug (MPI of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, DE) who aims at pushing the boundary of what image analyses and machine learning can do for quantifying biological data.

In addition, also data integration and the importance of bioinformatic tools in proteomics, metabolomics and single cell research will be presented by world-renowned scientists in the field.

During the previous editions the poster sessions were visited very well! So, if you have exciting research to share, don’t hesitate to submit your abstract by 12 January 2022!
