Biography

Ahmed Mahfouz is a computational biologist interested in developing algorithms and machine learning methods to study how genetic and environmental factors influence the molecular state of cells. During his PhD at TU Delft, Netherlands, he focused on developing methods to identify regional- and age-specific regulatory mechanisms in the brain using data from the Allen Brain Atlases. He further developed methods to link spatial-mapped transcriptomic measurements to brain imaging data to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying brain pathology in neurodegenerative diseases. Since 2019, he leads a research lab at the Department of Human Genetics at the Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands, where he focuses on developing computational methods for single-cell and spatial genomic data analysis, with particular focus on cell type identification, multi-modal data integration, and transcriptional regulation.
