Biography

Gabriel Rabinovich is Director of the Laboratory of Glycomedicine at the Institute of Biology and Experimental Medicine, Senior Investigator of the Argentinean National Research Council (CONICET) and Professor of Immunology at the University of Buenos Aires. Among several recognitions, he has been distinguished as Member of the US National Academy of Science, European Molecular Biology Organization, Latin American Academy of Science, World Academy of Science and Argentinean Academy of Sciences. His work was recognized with several awards including the Karl Meyer (USA), TWAS (Italy), Guggenheim (USA), Outstanding Investigator of the Nation (Argentina), Bunge Born (Argentina) and Konex Platinum Award, among others. He has published 320 articles in high profile journals and filled 11 patents of his work. He serves as Associate Editor or member of the editorial board of several journals. Together with his group, he identified a novel paradigm based on galectin-glycan interactions that controls immune and vascular programs. Briefly, he demonstrated that galectins can translate glycan-encoded information into novel regulatory programs that control inflammation, suppress autoimmune pathology and allow cancer cells to evade immune responses and promote angiogenesis. His findings opened new therapeutic possibilities in cancer and autoimmune inflammation. He recently co-founded Galtec Life, a Startup biotech aimed at translating galectin-based discoveries into new therapies. Gabriel directed 29 PhD students and 27 post-doctoral fellows, delivered 450 lectures, organized international meetings and has done an extensive work in promoting the advance of immunology and glycosciences all over the world. He received financial support from several national and international agencies.
