Martin Jones

The Francis Crick Institute, UK
Biography

Martin is Deputy Head of Microscopy Prototyping in the Electron Microscopy Science Technology Platform at the Francis Crick Institute in London, UK. His team’s work focuses on developing new hardware and software for dealing with the ever-increasing quantities of data produced in modern microscopy, particularly in Volume Electron Microscopy (vEM) and Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM). Martin originally trained as a physicist, with a DPhil in experimental atomic physics from Sussex University. He moved to biology in 2010 to work in the vascular biology lab at Cancer Research UK’s London Research Institute, working on microscope development and image analysis. From there, he joined the CRUK Electron Microscopy Unit, which migrated to the new Crick building in 2016. Martin is the chair of the Royal Microscopical Society’s new “Data Analysis in Imaging” section and contributes to computational education at the Crick, including image analysis courses and is a co-founder of the “Crick Data Challenge” hackathon-style events. He collaborates closely with the Crick’s Scientific Computing STP to develop new methods and pipelines to implement and deploy modern analysis techniques such as deep learning, aiming to make these advanced technologies accessible to end-users. Outside of research, Martin has developed and contributed to several outreach projects for CRUK and the Crick.
