Oliver Kohlbacher

University of Tübingen, DE
Biography

Oliver Kohlbacher studied chemistry and computer science and received his PhD in bioinformatics from Saarland University in 2001. After being an independent group leader at the Center for Bioinformatics Saar in Saarbrücken (2000-2003) and working as a postdoctoral researcher at Celera Genomics (Rockville, MD, USA), he became a full professor at University of Tübingen, Germany in 2003.

Research in the group of Oliver Kohlbacher (Chair for Applied Bioinformatics) focuses on method development for the analysis of high-throughput data (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), immunoinformatics, and structural bioinformatics. A particular focus is on the analysis of mass spectrometric data (proteomics, metaproteomics, metabolomics), for which is group has been developing open-source software (OpenMS).

Oliver Kohlbacher is also the former founding director of the Quantitative Biology Center (QBiC), director of the Institute for Translational Bioinformatics at the University Hospital Tübingen, director of the Institute for Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics at University of Tübingen, and Scientific Director of the Medical Data Integration Center of the University Hospital Tübingen.

He is a member of the steering board of the German Medical Informatics Initiative (MII), of the steering board of the German Genome Initiative (genomDE), the director of the Center for Integrative Bioinformatics within the German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI/ELIXIR-DE) as well as a co-coordinator of the German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA).
