Biography

Professor Philippe Beutels is a commercial engineer, doctor of medical sciences and professor of health economics. For over 25 years, his research has focused on mathematical models, economics, infectious diseases and public health.

After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sydney in Australia (2003-2005), he founded a new multidisciplinary center at UAntwerpen, CHERMID (Center for Health Economics Research & Modeling Infectious Diseases), and also incepted the interuniversity SIMID (Simulation Models for Infectious Diseases) consortium.

Prof Beutels is internationally one of the most prolific and cited authors on health economic aspects of infectious diseases and vaccination. He is a regular advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) and a lead author of the WHO guide on economic evaluation of vaccinations. He also took up leading roles in various international research projects, including in the POLYMOD (2004-2008), SARScontrol (2005-2008), RESCEU (2017-2021) and EPIPOSE (2020-2022) projects of the European Union.

In Belgium he is a member of the Superior Health Council, the Royal Academy of Medicine and the expert group on the pandemic management strategy (GEMS). He is currently director of CHERMID, co-director of SIMID and department chair of the Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Institute at the University of Antwerp.
