Biography

Ursula Jakob did her undergraduate studies and got her PhD at Regensburg University in Germany. She went on to the University of Michigan for postdoctoral studies with a fellowship from the German government – and she liked it so much there that she stayed on as an Assistant Research scientist at UM. She joined the faculty and formed her own research group there in 2001 and is currently the Patricia S. Yaeger Collegiate Professor at the Department of Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology.

Prof. Jakob received the prestigious "Biological Scholar" designation from the University of Michigan, won a Sokol Postdoctoral Award and is also a recipient of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award in Biomedical Science.

Ursula Jakob studies the role of oxidative stress in host defence and ageing. Her goal is to find ways to overcome microbial defense against oxidative stress and use antioxidant systems to extend human health and lifespan.
