Wilkister Nakami Nabulindo

Biography

Wilkister Nakami Nabulindo is a Veterinarian/Theriogenologist with a speciality in large animal reproduction and reproductive technologies. Nakami has vast knowledge and hands-on experience in livestock production systems in Kenya, application of reproductive technologies and gene editing experience. She has participated in several livestock projects in Kenya, aimed at improving productivity through assisted reproductive technologies, such as superovulation and embryo transfer, estrus synchronization, In Vitro fertilization, artificial insemination and genetic modification.

For her Master’s she worked on a project determining blood progesterone levels by field-based lateral flow Immunoassay for assessment of reproductive status in dairy cattle in Kenya. She has completed her PhD at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) where she was working on a project aimed at generating goat surrogate sires through gene-editing technology and also the establishment of spermatogonial stem cell cultures for genetic modification of the male germline. She’s passionate about the application of gene-editing technology in resolving challenges facing livestock in Kenya and Sub-Saharan Africa such as animal diseases and the low genetic potential of indigenous African livestock. She is also affiliated with the University of Nairobi where she tutors courses in reproductive courses to Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine students.
